Dani Olmo scores Spain's 100th goal at World Cups

Spain netted their 100th World Cup goal in their 2022 opener against Costa Rica as Dani Olmo netted the opener at Al Thumama Stadium on Wednesday.

La Roja aren't heavily fancied to succeed in Qatar due to the lack of a potent goalscorer and an over-reliance on creative midfielders, but made the best start possible as Olmo arrived in the box to lift the ball over Keylor Navas to reward Spain for their quick opening.

Spain enjoyed a period of dominance on the international stage during the late 2000s and early 2010s, winning a World Cup and two European Championships, but have struggled to put good runs together at major tournaments since.

Spain's most important World Cup goals

The most important of Spain's goals at the World Cup is undoubtedly Andres Iniesta's late winner in the 2010 World Cup final.

Approaching the end of an all-action but goalless affair with penalties on the horizon, the former Barcelona midfielder controlled the ball and fired in to earn La Roja their first world crown and a second successive tournament triumph after Euro 2008.

Rather shockingly, 2010 is the only occasion Spain have made it past the quarter finals of the World Cup, meaning a lot of the goals they've scored at the competition have been a little fruitless.

Three strikes from David Villa pulled Spain through the 2010 group stages, while he would net second-half winners in the last 16 and quarter final victories over Portugal and Paraguay respectively. Carles Puyol's header against Germany sealed yet another 1-0 win for the Spaniards before that victory over the Netherlands.
