Johnny Carson: Biography & Early Life

On October 23, 1925, John William Carson was born to Homer Lloyd Carson and Ruth Elizabeth Carson in the city of Corning, Iowa. Johnny Carson had a flair for entertainment from an early age when, at the age of 12, he used to perform magic tricks for the family.

Carson served in the military when he joined the United States Navy in 1943 and was trained in the V-12 Navy College Training Program at Columbia University. He was enlisted and was posted on USS Pennsylvania during World War 2, where he served as a communications officer, decoding encrypted messages.

He took advantage of the educational opportunities in the Navy and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Speech from the University of Nebraska in 1949. He wrote his thesis on ‘How to Write Comedian Jokes,’ which helped him graduate in three years.

Johnny Carson: Career

Carson’s entertainment career began in 1950 at WOW radio and television in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1951, he was referred to an up-and-coming television station in California, KNXT, where he had his own show called Carson’s Cellar, which had a massive cult following. This following attracted the eye of comic Red Skelton, who offered Carson a job as his writer in 1954. Other than Carson’s Cellar, Johnny also hosted shows like Earn Your Vacation and a variety of shows, The Johnny Carson Show.

Tonight on NBC was a late-night show which was a counterpart of the Today show on NBC. Back then, Tonight’s show was quite experimental but saw much success with original host Steve Allen who Jack Paar later replaced. After Carson’s fame from an ABC show, NBC invited him to take over the Tonight show before Paar’s departure. Though Carson eventually declined due to a fear of interviewing guests for 105 hours, he later n February 1962 accepted the offer.

Johnny Carson finally starred as a host on October 1, 1962. Though he had some trouble initially, he soon gained confidence in the interviews. Even though the show had much success with its previous hosts, Johnny Carson elevated it to new levels.

He brought many new aspects to the show, which vibrates in the late shows today. Ed McMohan, who previously worked with Carson on ABC, came and joined him as his announcer and sidekick. Carson had a trademark phantom golf swing, which has been copied and varied by many hosts today.

Johnny Carson was a great show and comedic act and has been awarded like six Emmy Awards, Television Academy’s 1980 Governor’s Award, and a Peabody Award in 1985. Carson was honoured to be inducted into the Television Academy Hall of fame in 1992, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992 and the Kennedy Center Honor in 1993.
