La Liga president claims football misses Lionel Messi in dig at Ligue 1

La Liga president Javier Tebas has taken a dig at Ligue 1, saying that football has missed Lionel Messi since the seven-time Ballon d'Or left Barcelona and joined Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi is currently playing his second campaign in France after joining PSG in the summer of 2021 and has been on fire thus far this season.

After a somewhat disappointing first year in Paris, the Argentine looks to be getting back to his best, bagging 12 goals and 13 assists in 17 matches so far in 2022/23.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, there is talk that he could return to Barcelona while he has also been linked with a move to the MLS.

Speaking at the Ole Sports Summit, Tebas rued Messi leaving la Liga in the first place, saying football misses him now he plays in France.

“I think that Messi is not only missed in La Liga, he is missed in football, because the French league is what it is, right?" he said. "I think that no matter how much he is at PSG, he is followed much less than when he was at Futbol Club Barcelona.

"Therefore, football misses Lionel Messi and we hope he has a great World Cup, because there we will all be able to see him again. I don't see all the fans watching PSG against Nantes, I don't see it. With Barça, within a league, I did see him much more often."
