Mauricio Pochettino holding out for Tottenham reunion amid Aston Villa links

Mauricio Pochettino is currently not hugely interested at the prospect of replacing Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa should the job become available as he would rather his next role come at former club Tottenham, 90min understands.

The West Midlands side have made an indifferent start to the 2022/23 season, and Gerrard has scarcely improved them since replacing Dean Smith last year.

While the club are insistent that Gerrard still has their full backing, 90min understands that Pochettino's camp have been contacted by intermediaries to gauge his interest should the job at Villa Park become available.

The Argentine's representatives would at least listen to any offer from Villa as they could potentially promise significant investment in the playing squad in the coming transfer windows.

However, 90min understands that Pochettino is keen on heading back to Spurs and reckons that the job may soon be vacated.

Current head coach Antonio Conte's deal expires at the end of the current season - the club retain an option to extend this by a further year - and Tottenham would like to tie him down to a new contract amid interest from Juventus.

But as 90min reported last month, Juve's financial struggles make such a move unlikely at this time.

Pochettino was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain this summer after a year-and-a-half in charge at Parc des Princes. He won Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions in his time in the French capital.

In brief interviews since leaving Spurs in 2019, Pochettino has insisted that he would like to return to the club one day having gone five-and-a-half years without silverware in his initial stint in the dugout.

Pochettino helped design minor aspects of the club's billion-pound Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though has not returned to the ground since his sacking.
