Hearts Made From Foam Could be Used in Human Bodies

Researchers have made a counterfeit heart made of foam that could be better than existing devices at pumping blood around the body.

Regular artificial hearts are strong blocks of machinery; however the new device is made of another stretchy, lightweight material with the consistency of adaptable foam.

The material can be formed into any shape, and has joined pores that permit liquids to be pumped through it productively.

The polymer froth begins as a fluid and can be filled a mold to make a scope of shapes.

Known as elastomer foam, it can move and switch its length by up to 300%.

Cornell University’s mechanical and aerospace design group utilized the foam to outline the artificial heart, with carbon fiber utilized as a part of the external shell.

One of the advantages of making organs out the material is that it’s effectively altered for individual patients.

The analysts are working with therapeutic specialists to make their hearts biocompatible so they can be utilized as substitution organs.

Assistant professor Rob Shepherd, who is member of the project, said “(Testing) shows the three-dimensional complexity we can get from our process … we believe it has the potential, after further development, to be a viable replacement for a heart.”

He also included that the material could likewise be utilized to make prosthetic hands.
