Kambu gained attention when his estranged wife reported that he had come home only to severely beat her in a drunken rage.
Photos of Gakii’s injuries only fueled public outcry over the case.
UNEP told Nairobi News of the case in a statement: “Without prejudice to the privileges and immunities accorded to the United Nations and its staff members, it is the duty of all persons enjoying such privileges and immunities to respect local laws,”
The parents of the battered woman have since vehemently insisted that the family receives cash compensation out of the case, to the tune of KSh 40 million.

On Tuesday, October 20, Kambu allegedly returned home drunk. He then beat his wife into critical condition. He accused Gakii of not properly caring for their three year old son. Photos of the injuries from the alleged beating surfaced.
Gakii has alleged that she has received as series of harassing text messages claiming to be the lover of Kambu.
Kambu originally hails from the nation of Papua New Guinea.
