Gareth Southgate has insisted that he is the right man for the England job following a disappointing run of results.

The Three Lions remain one of the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup this winter, but Southgate's side have struggled for form of late, failing to win any of their last five games and suffering relegation in the Nations League.

Perhaps the most damning stat from this poor run is, despite the wealth of attacking talent in the squad, they haven't scored a goal from open play in five games.

Speaking ahead of England's Nations League clash with Germany on Monday at Wembley Stadium, Southgate remained confident that he was the perfect man to lead the Three Lions at this year's World Cup:

"I think I’m the right person to take the team into the tournament. I think it’s more stable that way, without a doubt.

"I don’t think [the] performance [against Italy] was far off and I know that’s going to get derision just because we’re on the back of a run of defeats.

"In the past we’ve had runs of friendlies, or whatever the matches are, and then we’ve gone into tournaments and that’s the first time we’ve hit high-level opposition and it’s hit us in the face quite often," he added: "Now we know the level, now we know what we’ve got to improve and we’ll be better placed for that by having had the quality of matches that we’ve had.”
