Ohanaeze backs CUPP, says 2023 elections will not be credible under Yakubu

Following allegations leveled against the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, by the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), which include high level of falsification, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, said the 2023 general elections will not be credible under Yakubu.

In a statement in Abakaliki, the Secretary General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, noted, based on the allegations, that it has been revealed that the INEC boss is biased, unpredictable and unreliable to independently give Nigerians a credible election. The group added that he should resign honourably or be sacked.

He noted that he should be interrogated by relevant agencies for the manipulation and distortions of voter register in line with laws of the land, adding that Nigerians have lost confidence in the electoral process under the watch of Yakubu.
Ohanaeze, therefore, insists that his continued stay, as INEC Chairman, constitutes a security risk for the country.

The statement reads: “Ohanaeze has accused the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, of not being prepared and competent in conducting free, fair, and credible elections in 2023, as evidence of falsification leveled against him by CUPP, revealed that he is biased, unpredictable and unreliable to, independently, give Nigerians credible election.

“The best option for him is to follow the path of honour and resign or be sacked. He should, therefore, be interrogated by relevant agencies for the manipulation and distortions of voter register in line with laws of the land.

Nigerians have lost confidence in the electoral process under the watch of Yakubu, as his continued stay as INEC Chairman constitutes security risk for the country. Other elections supervised under him might not be acceptable and can trigger avoidable constitutional disaster that might derail our democracy in 2023.

“Irrespective of the outcomes of Osun and Ekiti elections, there are many sins of Yakubu that should lead to his sack – the falsification allegations against him by CUPP, as well as his disobedience to the pronunciation of Supreme Court verdict on the All Progressives Grand alliance (APGA) leadership crisis are few of them.”
