In what will come across as a really startling development, a wolf has caused chaos at a zoo, causing guests to go into panic mode.

The wolf caused stir after escaping from its enclosure and gallivanting around a guest area for five minutes.

Sarra, a four-year-old Mexican grey wolf, managed to break out of an off-exhibit area at a zoo in Ohio, USA, on Monday morning (September 5).

Jacqueline Gerling, director of communications at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, told USA TODAY that the beast was wandering around the guest path for around five minutes.

Luckily, in that time it didn't attack any members of the public or staff, and it was secured and returned to its enclosure without causing any injuries.

Gerling confirmed that the zoo is now investigating how Sarra managed to get out.

The zoo's five other Mexican grey wolves remained safely contained throughout the incident.

Chris Kuhar, executive director of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, said that the wolf wasn't in its usual habitat when it broke free.

He told WKYC-TV: "The wolves were not on exhibit; they were in an off-exhibit area, an exhibit space that we don't use very often. Apparently the wolf was able to get out of that space."

Several visitors managed to snap photos of Sarra on the loose, including Jesse Hudson who was riding on the zoo's tram with his son at the time.

"The wolf ran by us on the left, then turned around and ran back up the hill," Hudson said.

Mexican grey wolves are the smallest of the grey wolf subspecies, growing to be around 5.5ft (1.67m) in length and weighing 90lbs (41kg).

It is also the most endangered grey wolf subspecies – as of 2021, there are 186 wild Mexican wolves and 350 in captive breeding programs.
