Samsung working on its own fingerprint scanners, rumors suggest

Samsung already supplies all kinds of components to other manufacturers in the industry, such as RAM and flash memory modules, processors, displays and so on. However, when it comes to their fingerprint scanners, they rely heavily on Synaptics, a US-based company that specializes in interface development.

This might be changing soon, since recent rumors suggest Samsung is working on its own fingerprint scanners. It is believed that the company's System LSI department is developing the solution since last year. The same division of the company is responsible for developing better processors, interfaces and so on.

If the rumors are to be believed, Samsung will be ready to outfit their low and mid-range smartphones with in-house-built fingerprint sensors next year, and will later look into using them in the flagship Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. The next step after that would be to sell the modules to other manufacturers.

Samsung has yet to comment the rumors officially, so we'll make sure to follow the subject as it develops.
