Falcons' Coach Names Squad For AWC

Head coach of the Nigerian Women’s national team, Edwin Okon, has named his squad for the 2014 Africa Women’s Championships,AWC, holding in Namibia from 11–25 October 2014.
According to the final squad of the Super Falcons announced by coach Okon on Monday, 29 September, 2014, it included three goalkeepers, six defenders, six midfielders and six strikers.

Supersport reports that among the invited players are six overseas-based players and 15 players playing in the domestic league.

Among the most high profile players called up are Precious Dede, Onome Ebi, (captain) Evelyn Nwabuoku, Asisat Oshoala, Perpetua Nkwocha and Desire Oparanozie.
Commenting on the squad, En Avant Guingamp attacker, Opranozie said she was scared she would miss out on selection after her club initially expressed reservations about releasing her for the competition.

“To be honest, I was scared of missing out but thank God for his mercies. Everything has worked out just fine in the end.
“Right now, the focus is clear, we must win the title in Namibia and return to our right place as the best team in African,”Oparanozie told supersport.com.

Nigeria will compete in Group A of the 2014 AWC alongside Zambia, the Ivory Coast and hosts, Namibia.

The 2014 AWC would serve as qualification tournament for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with top three qualifying for the finals in Canada.
The tournament marks the first participation of Namibia in the African championship.
Also for the first time the defending champions, Equatorial Guinea, are not taking part after failing to win their last qualifying round match.
