Paul Pogba could miss World Cup with knee injury

Paul Pogba's hopes of featuring at the 2022 World Cup have been dealt a blow following further tests on his recent knee injury.

The midfielder returned to Juventus on a free transfer from Manchester United this summer, but his preparations for the new season were hampered when he tore his meniscus in training last week.

Following initial tests, Pogba was expected to undergo surgery in the United States, where Juve are currently on their pre-season tour.

However, Gazzetta dello Sport report that he is instead flying back to Italy to assess his two options moving forward.

Pogba's first option would be to have a piece of his meniscus removed, and this would keep him out for around two months. However, this is believed to be a more risky option at this stage of his career and is usually recommended for younger players.

Instead, Pogba's second option would be to suture the lesion, but this could rule him out until 2023, missing France's World Cup defence in Qatar. Les Bleus kick off their campaign against Australia on November 22.

The 29-year-old will now meet with a specialist to discuss the best course of action with hope that he can return to action prior to the World Cup.
