UK government rule out extra bank holiday if England win Euro 2022 final

The UK government has ruled out calling an extra bank holiday if England beat Germany in the Euro 2022 final on Sunday.

The record-shattering finals come to an end at Wembley this weekend, with the Lionesses just one win away from their first ever major tournament victory.

Standing in their way are Germany, who have conceded just once en route to the final and beat a strong France side in the semis.

Despite this, expectations are high for the Lionesses too, who have also seriously impressed throughout the tournament in front of record crowds for a Women's Euros.

Leader of the Opposition Keir Starmer called for the government to declare a further bank holiday if Sarina Wiegman's side secured victory on Sunday, a move which also has support from former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch.

However, the government has since ruled out such a celebration.

"The Lionesses have done England proud with their fantastic run to the Euro 2022 final," a government spokesperson said.

"The whole country will be roaring them on and hopefully watching a famous victory against Germany on Sunday evening. We will certainly be celebrating their success.

"However, the current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and while an additional bank holiday may benefit some communities and sectors, the cost to the economy of an additional bank holiday is considerable."
