Zlatan Ibrahimovic signs new AC Milan contract

AC Milan have confirmed that Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has put pen to paper on a new 12-month contract.

The 40-year-old's previous deal with the Serie A champions expired earlier this summer but talks over an extension were well underway by that point and it was always a matter of when, rather than if, Ibrahimovic would renew with Milan.

That day has finally come, with Milan taking to their official website to confirm: "AC Milan is pleased to announce that it has concluded an agreement for the right to sports performance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"The Swedish striker has signed a contract with the Club until 30 June 2023 and will continue to wear the Rossoneri number 11 shirt."

Ibrahimovic is understood to have accepted a significant reduction in salary to extend his stay with Milan, in part because he is not expected to return from a knee injury until January 2023.

He started 11 Serie A games last season and will eventually return to offer cover for a forward line which already includes Olivier Giroud, Ante Rebic, Rafael Leao and summer signing Divock Origi, who joined on a free transfer from Liverpool.

Milan have also confirmed the loan departure of defender Mattia Caldara, who joins Spezia on a 12-month deal with the option to make it permanent.
