Although Mount has two years to run on his current contract and James three, neither player is among the Blues' top earners despite them emerging as key players over the past few seasons.

Mount last penned fresh terms in the summer of 2019 before enjoying his breakout season at Stamford Bridge, while James renewed his contract midway through the same campaign as both were given opportunities with the club under a transfer embargo.

Both men have since developed into standout performers for Chelsea, winning the Champions League in 2021 and becoming guaranteed starters under head coach Thomas Tuchel.

Although there had been some doubt over Mount and James' futures amid interest from Real Madrid and leading Premier League sides, the England internationals have both signalled their intent to extend their stays at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on pre-season tour in the US, Mount told The Athletic: "I’ve got two years left on my contract and I’m very, very happy here.

"Those talks will hopefully be starting soon."

James echoed that sentiment. Asked about Real Madrid's interest in him and whether he saw his long-term future at Chelsea, the wing-back said: "I'd like to think so, yeah. I grew up as a Chelsea fan and I've made my name playing for Chelsea, the club I've always supported.

"I don't see why anything would change, I play for Chelsea now and yeah, I'm enjoying it."

90min understands Chelsea are in no major rush to open talks with James over a one or two-year extension. They are unfazed by interest from Man City and Los Blancos, safe in the belief that they possess one of the finest full-backs on the planet and interest from Europe's leading clubs is therefore inevitable.

James has been associated with Chelsea since the ages of six and his father has previously suggested that his son dreams of becoming club captain - signalling his commitment and loyalty to the Blues.
