Tenure extension for LGs: Pandemonium in Plateau Assembly as PDP lawmakers stage walk-out

Crisis engulfed the Plateau State House of Assembly on Thursday as ten Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers staged a walk out over the six-month tenure extension of the management committee chairmen of the 17 local government councils in the state.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Peter Azi had read a communication from governor Simon Lalong asking for the extension of the tenure of the management Committee chairmen to six months for stability and focus.

According to the governor, the six-month extension is to allow the government to put some necessary machinery in place for a conducive conduct of council poll in the state.

Contributing on the floor of the assembly, the member representing Kantana state constituency under the platform of PDP and deputy speaker, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi said they were in the receipt of eleven petitions against the management committee chairmen.

According to him, if the management committee chairmen were doing well, there would not be petition against them, most especially as the petitions were coming from the APC.

He pointed out that there were allegations of massive corruption leveled against the management committee chairmen, arguing that their tenure should not be extended more that two months.

Also speaking, member representing Jos North, North constituency, Hon. Ibrahim Baba Hassan urged the house to consider the six-month tenure extension to pave way for proper planing of council election in the state.

However, just as the speaker, Hon. Peter Azi had wanted to put the motion on a voice vote, 10 PDP lawmakers staged a walk-out from the assembly chamber.
The House eventually extended the tenure of the Management committee chairmen to six months.
