Presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina noted in a statement that the President “did so out of consideration for avoidable hardships imposed on members of the public by road closures and other security measures which Presidential movements to the National Mosque necessitate”.
Unlike the trend in which all former Presidents and Vice Presidents of the Muslim extraction had been making it a point of duty to attend the Friday services at the National Mosque, Abuja, Buhari chose to partake in the prayers in the small mosque inside Aso Rock.
The past Muslim presidents or Vice Presidents had always caused serious traffic jam in various roads linking the national mosque as well as those around the federal secretariat and the entire central area due to heavy security presence on the roads that were always blocked whenever they were about to go to the mosque or return to the villa.
After his swearing in on May 29, Buhari had been observing the Juma’at “prayers at the National Mosque, apart from last Friday when he was in his home town, Daura in Katsina State.
The Friday prayer which was led by the State House Chief Imam, Abdulwaheed Suleiman, attracted almost all Muslim faithfuls at the Villa who had hitherto attended the Juma’at with either the former presidents or their deputy in the past.
In the statement made available to LEADERSHIP Weekend , Adesina said the president’s decision to observe the Juma’at prayer at the villa mosque was to avoid such logjam Nigerians had been subjected to because of the VIP movements.
He said, “Accordingly, the President has decided that henceforth he will mostly observe the Juma’at prayers with other Muslims at the Presidential Villa Mosque.
“President Buhari will still join the larger Muslim Community for Friday prayers at the National Mosque and other mosques in Abuja occasionally”.
