I didn’t know the drugs were fake – ‘Fake’ pharmacist tells court

One Monday Enuma on Friday appeared at a Federal High Court in Abuja charged with selling fake drugs in his shop in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Enuma, arraigned by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
He told the court that he did not know that the drugs he had were fake, since they had the same packaging as the original ones.

Trial judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba advised Enuma, a self-professed pharmacist, to desist from selling fake drugs as he was putting the lives of several unsuspecting Nigerians at risk.

“If your relative is ill, will you send those drugs without NAFDAC number to them? That is not the way to make money; you have to stop selling fake drugs because you could incur the wrath of God,” Dimgba said.

He granted Ebuma bail in the sum of N10 million and two sureties in the sum of N5 million each.

The judge said the sureties could be private businessmen, professionals or public servants not lower than grade level 13.

The sureties must also owe property within Abuja or Kaduna metropolis.

Dimgba stressed the need for accelerated hearing and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison until he perfected his bail conditions.
