Gobe! 62-Yr-Old Man In Trouble Over N1M Hotel Bill

For his inability to pay an accumulated bill of over a million naira, 62-year-old Onyedi Nwaguru was, weekend, arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lagos.

The defendant is facing a two-count charge bordering on pretence and unlawfully lodging at Eagles Hotel, preferred against him by the police.

It was learned that the said room was booked by a business partner of Onyedi Nwaguru, sometimes in March 31. Nwaguru moved into the hotel to join the friend, Daudu, on May 30.

The defendant was expected to pay N15,000 per night, but ended up not paying for the two months he allegedly spent at the hotel, leading to accumulated debt of N1,028,500, offences punishable under Section 409 and 313(a) of the criminal law of Lagos State, 2011.

The complainant, Remi Akinwale the General Manager of Eagle’s Hotel, told the court that the defendant lodged in the hotel for two months and whenever he was asked of his rent, he kept making promises.

She also told the court that the actual person who booked the room was one Prince Daudu John, and the room was booked on March 31. She went further to tell the court that the defendant was only a friend to the said Daudu and he started living with this Daudu on May 30.

Daudu absconded from the hotel, telling the defendant that he was going out to see to the payment of their contract, but never returned.

Magistrate Sola Doye, granted a bail bond of N1 million with two sureties in like sum, adding that the sureties must show evidence of two years tax payment and their addresses verified.

He adjourned the case to August 24 for mention.
