Fight Club’s Chinese Release Gives 1999 Film a New Ending

It has been over two decades since the theatrical release of David Fincher’s Fight Club, and now Variety brings word that the classic action film’s controversial ending has been completely altered for its China release on Tencent Video, which is the country’s largest video streamer.

The new censored version is very different from the original as the film cuts before the buildings explode, replacing it with an English-language title card where the authorities were able to stop Tyler from detonating the explosives.

“The police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding. After the trial, Tyler was sent to lunatic asylum [sic] receiving psychological treatment. He was discharged from the hospital in 2012,” the card reads.

Fight Club was directed by David Fincher from a screenplay written by Jim Uhls, based on Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel of the same name. It starred Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter, Jared Leto, and the late actor Meat Loaf, who passed away at the age of 74 last week.

During its theatrical release, the film received mixed reviews from critics, and had a poor box office performance. However, it later received commercial success with its home video release which led to the film becoming an official cult classic.
