Spider-Man: No Way Home and Scream Duke it Out at the Box Office Over Quiet Weekend

Following strong showings during the MLK holiday weekend, the box office slowed down substantially this weekend with no new wide releases to offer audiences. As such, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Scream again led the domestic top 10 with $14.1 million (-30%) and $12.4 million (-59%), while Sing 2 again came in third with a 3-day $5.7 million total.

Spidey now sits at $721 million domestically and roughly $40 million behind James Cameron’s Avatar for the No. 3 spot on the all-time domestic earners (Star Wars: The Force Awakens sits at No. 1 with $936 million while Avengers: Endgame is No. 2 with $858 million, respectively). Per Deadline, the Spider-Man is performing 31% ahead of Avatar (which sat at $551.7 million after MLK weekend) but is much more front-loaded. Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster was still pulling big crowds through President’s Day weekend, while Spidey’s numbers have declined much quicker. That’s just the nature of the business these days.

Worldwide, No Way Home has amassed a massive $1.69 billion, landing it at the No. 6 spot all-time (not adjusted for inflation, of course). The sequel has a lot of work to do if it’s going to reach Avatar’s chart-topping $2.8 billion haul, and may not even reach the totals of Avengers: Infinity War ($2.05 billion) or The Force Awakens ($2.06 billion). Time will tell.

As for Scream, the slasher sequel performed better than expected in its second frame, its drop slightly less than Scream 4’s (-61%). All told, the film has collected $51.3 million through two weeks.

Now that Sony has pushed the oft-delayed Morbius back from January 28 to April 1 due to the ongoing pandemic, our next big release won’t be until Feb. 4 when Moonfall and Jackass Forever hit cinemas.
