Diaby could miss three more months after fresh injury blow

The injury-plagued midfielder is believed to have torn a muscle in training in the latest of a series of setbacks and is expected to be out of action well into the New Year

Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby could be sidelined for three months after suffering a serious hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old is believed to have suffered a muscle tear in training and is expected to be out well into the New Year. It is the latest shattering blow for the Frenchman, whose career has been plagued by injury.

Diaby had been slowly working his way back to full fitness after making just two appearances for Arsenal since March 2013, when he snapped a knee ligament.

He made a single substitute appearance last season and has only been involved for the first team in the current campaign during September's Capital One Cup defeat to Southampton.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has spoken of re-inventing the offensively-minded Diaby as a midfield anchorman but this latest setback places his Emirates career in huge doubt.

The France international's contract expires next summer and there is little chance of it being renewed.

Diaby has suffered terribly with injuries ever since breaking his ankle at Sunderland four months after joining Arsenal from Auxerre in the January window of 2006, making just 182 appearances for the club in nine seasons.

He has not been a key member of the first team for some time but the predicted long-term absence of the Frenchman will make it even more likely that Wenger will target a new central midfielder during the January window.

As revealed by Goal, Arsenal have been scouting Germany international Christoph Kramer after failing in a bid to sign Sporting Lisbon's William Carvalho on the last day of the summer window.

The Gunners are also in the market for a centre-back in January, with Celtic's Virgil van Dijk and West Ham's Winston Reid top of their target list
