Motorcyclists dump dead colleague at policeman’s house

Some motorcyclists, who plied the Shasha and Dopemu areas of Lagos on Monday stormed the residence of a policeman attached to the Dopemu Police Division, and dumped the corpse of an okada rider, who they claimed was killed by the policeman.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the yet-to-be-identified okada rider, who was being chased from the expressway by the policeman for violating traffic laws, had been crushed by a hit-and-run driver.

It was gathered that before the motorcyclist could be rushed to a nearby hospital, he died.

A police source said the police had come to the area to enforce the state law of restricting commercial motorcyclists from operating in restricted areas.

A resident of the area, who begged for anonymity, said the police had shot the motorcyclist in the process of his escape.

Our correspondent learnt that the motorcyclists, who converged on the policeman’s house, allegedly vandalised property in the residence before leaving their dead colleague.

On Tuesday morning, violence resumed in the area when fight broke out between the motorcyclists and some policemen.

It was learnt that in the ensuing fight, residents scampered for safety.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, while confirming the incident, added that the motorcyclist was killed by a hit-and-run driver while trying to flee from arrest.

She said, “The police had come to the area to ask motorcyclists to leave the restricted areas. One of them saw the police, and he started to run away. In the process, he was hit by a hit-and-run commercial bus driver. Before he could be rushed to a nearby hospital, he died.

“They took the corpse to the policeman’s house. He was among the men on duty at that time. When they got to his house, residents alerted the police, who came to retrieve the dead body and take it to mortuary. This morning, motorcyclists came again to foment trouble, but nobody was killed. Meanwhile, normalcy had returned in the area
