Michael Bay, Gareth Evans & Patrick Hughes Team Up for Netflix’s The Raid

A trio of high-profile action directors are coming together to reimagine The Raid for Netflix.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard director Patrick Hughes, who also helmed its sequel and The Expendables 3, will direct the film, while Michael Bay (Bad Boys) and XYZ Films will produce the project. Meanwhile, Gareth Evans, who wrote and directed the original The Raid, will serve as executive producer along with Range Media Partners. Hughes and James Beaufort are writing the script.

“We’re incredibly excited about Patrick’s unique vision for this film. It’s a distinctly original take on the material, which promises to pay great respect to the original film while also bringing a fresh approach and perspective that will set its own course in the action genre,” the producers told Deadline.

On Twitter, Netflix revealed the first information on the new version of The Raid‘s plot. “The film is set in Philadelphia’s drug-infested ‘Badlands’, where an undercover DEA task force climbs a ladder of cartel informants to catch a kingpin,” says the streamer.

Evans’ The Raid was released in 2011. The Indonesian action thriller became a cult hit and a sequel called The Raid 2 was released in 2014. Both films received critical and commercial praise for their action scenes.

“A rookie member of an elite team of commandos, Rama (Iko Uwais) is instructed to hang back while his comrades-in-arms go ahead with their mission to take down a brutal crime lord called Tama (Ray Sahetapy),” says the synopsis for the original film. “However, the team’s cover is blown, and Tama offers sanctuary to every criminal in his high-rise apartment block in exchange for the cops’ heads. Now Rama must take command and lead his remaining team on an ultraviolent charge through the building to complete — and survive — the mission.”
