Cross River State allocates N200m to fish pond, others

The Cross River Basin Development Authority (CRBDA) has allocated N200 million for the construction of a fish pond. The idea of revamping the pond was mooted before the pond and other facilities of the river basin authority were vandalised by #EndsSARS protesters, fourteen months ago.

The spokesman of the Cross River Development Authority, Jackson John, said at a media briefing that with the purchase of 10,000 fingerlings, the potential of the pond would increase. He said the river basin authority already concluded plans for the pond before protesters destroyed properties within the premises and disrupted the idea.

The agency stated that it operates a small Shongai Integrated Farm which includes poultry, fish pond, pigsty, mushroom garden, and greenhouses. The agency said it carried out major renovations and put up structures better than the ones that were destroyed.

“During the #EndSARS protest, our greenhouses were destroyed and all chicks looted, but as we speak now, we have restocked them.

“Before the protest, we had about 5,000 chicks, but now we have capacity for about 10,000 broilers and layers.

“We were working on a drip irrigation system but the protest disrupted the entire activity and most facilities were vandalised. We are bringing them back soon,’’ John said.
