While details are sparse, director Destin Daniel Cretton will return to helm the sequel. Also as part of a new deal with Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective, Cretton will also be working on a new Marvel Cinematic Universe series for Disney+.

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings,” said Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige. “We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”

Cretton was equally as excited and called working on the first film “one of the highlights of [his] life.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings featured the introduction of Canadian actor Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience) as the Master of Kung-Fu, Shang-Chi. In Marvel Studios’ first Asian superhero-led movie, the titular hero must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

The film also starred Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Ronny Chieng, Florian Munteanu, Yuen Wah, and Dallas Liu. Joining them are MCU alums Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), and Michelle Yeoh in her second role within the MCU following her appearance as a different character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay he co-wrote with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham. It hails from producers Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers.
