How to remove third-party app permissions on Facebook

With many people having used Facebook for over a decade now, there is every chance that you have long since forgotten which apps you allowed access to your account in the past, yet there is a way to remove third-party app permissions on the popular social networking website.

Whether it be games like Farmville or an application which allows you to present your Facebook profile with the old 'wall' template, these apps are still able to access your data, even if you haven't actively used them for years.

Some of these apps allow location tracking, while others can upload the contacts on your phone and even photos, it really depends on how sinister the creators or current holders happen to be.

What can I do?

Fear not, you are not beholden to these pesky third-party apps, there is merely a quick process which you must go through to ensure your permission settings on Facebook are as tight as you wish for them to be.

This simple process is called revoking app permissions, which will allow you to remove any third-party application which has had access to your data at any time since you opened your Facebook account.

How do I revoke app permissions?

You must follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to 'account settings'

  2. Click 'apps' on the left-hand sidebar

  3. Click the 'X' on the right of each individual app to revoke its access to your data

  4. Click 'remove' when the window asks you to

  5. You may also disable Facebook's 'platform' feature which prevents Facebook from automatically integrating with games and applications for log-in purposes in the future.

Is there a quicker way?

For the more time-sensitive among you, there is a newly operation way that Facebook helps you remove unwanted apps from your account in one go.L

Using the 'privacy check-up' feature which is housed in the privacy tab on account settings, you will then be shown a list of apps with permissions which you can go through and remove or change.
