Don commends Buhari for signing NBTC Bill into law

A Professor of Hematology and Blood Transfusion Science at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Anthony Emeribe, has applauded President Muhammad Buhari for signing the National Blood Transmission Commission (NBTC) Bill into law.

Emeribe gave the commendation, yesterday, during the 102nd Inaugural Lecture titled: Sanguis: Gateway To Quality Human Disease Diagnosis, Management And Research at the UNICAL International Convention Centre.

The university teacher, who enjoined Nigerians to develop the habit of donating blood to save lives, recommended that stem transplantation centres should be created in the six geopolitical zones of the country with the right professionals in the healthcare sector.

His words: “We are happy with the President for signing the National Blood Transmission Commission Bill and we pray it should be given what it requires so that we have enough blood and the software to know where they are mostly needed.

“We should sure the right professionals are in place to give the best to members of the public in terms of quality healthcare.”

Emeribe said he took a holistical view of the topic based on the rare privilege of serving at the national, regional and global levels, stressing that blood is a gift of life from God that should not be toyed with and advised Nigerians to develop the habit of becoming blood donors.

“There is the need to improve infrastructure, displace of quacks, improve the processes we have in place and set up stem transplantation centres in the six geopolitical zones,” he said.

Speaking, Chairman of the Lecture and Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof. Florence Obi, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) Administration, Prof. Michael Okom, said the lecture series would go a long way in boosting scholarship programmes in the university.
