Obviously, Buhari is not the first Northerner to become Nigeria’s democratically elected president but it feels like he is the most hated so far.
In 1979, Shehu Shagari was elected into the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and he wasn’t hated by Southerners because he practiced what he preached.
He represented Nigeria’s diversity with the slogan “One Nation, One Destiny“.
Late Musa Yar’adua is also another president from the North. He was in office from May 2007 to 5th May 2010 when death cut short his journey as President of Nigeria.
Within his short term, he won the hearts of Nigerians with a seven-point agenda centered around Infrastructure, power, and energy, Food security, Wealth creation, Transport, Land reforms, Security, Education.
The way he was able to resolve the Niger Delta crisis with a working amnesty programme will never be forgotten in the history of Nigeria. No Southerner hated Yar’adua.
However, Buhari’s emergence as President happened based on pure love all Nigerians have for his “Change Agenda“. The love has since turned to hate even from his first 4-years. 2023 seems to be very far for all Nigerians who are eager to vote him out.
Nigerians from the South and East have never sought for Nigeria’s break-up with so much passion as we’ve witnessed under Buhari’s administration. But why?
