Why Davido's 'A Better Time' Album Didn't Live Up To Expectation - Editorial

Popular Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer, David Adedeji Adeleke, who is popularly known as Davido seems to have had a poor ride following the release of his third studio album 'A Better Time'.

The 28-year old Nigerian pop singer, Davido stormed the rose to fame after releasing "Dami Duro", the second single from his debut studio album Omo Babalowo.

Davido who has a deal with Sony Music released two more albums; 'A Good Time' and 'A Better Time' album in 2019 and 2020 respectively. 'A Better Time' album released last year came after he amassed a billion streams from his sophomore A Good Time album. The album featured six Americans (Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, NasHitBoyChris Brown and Young Thug), one Ghanaian (Mugeez), one South African (Sho Madjozi), one Kenyan Afropop band (Sauti Sol), and four Nigerians (MayorkunTiwa SavageBella Shmurda and Ckay). Production credits went to KiddominantNapji, Fresh VDM, Speroach, Blaise Beatz, Lord Sky, and other talented music producers.

Despite the huge stars on this album, the project has not been able to live up to expectations. The album recorded 100 streams in three days accumulating all the streams from the singles. Eight months later, it recorded 512 million streams across all platforms. it currently charts in only 14 countries on iTunes and only appears on Top 100 albums in six countries including, Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana, Niger, Barbados, and Zimbabwe.

This is poor for an album with Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, Chris Brown, and other top American artists, and here is why the album failed to live up to our expectations.

1. Nothing seemed organic

The songs on the album especially those featuring international stars seemed forced and inorganic. Davido probably chose to work with his longtime idols to working with stars he has some level of chemistry with. We all know music is an art and a form of story-telling and in these records or most of them, they couldn't tell a story probably because they don't share the same story and/or haven't bonded enough.

2. Little or no demand

This is an obvious reason. There was little demand for this album. Davido could have rested for a while and maybe drop this body of work when there is a demand for a new Davido project.

3. Too sudden / Wrong timing

The A Better Time album came too sudden. An artist has got to grow to record some great fits. A collaboration with Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, etc isn't bad but dropping the album at that point in his career was a bit too early. This could be likened to the reason why Wizkid's Sounds From The Other Side failed to leave the impact we see on Made in Lagos.
