Nnamdi Kanu was living luxury life with private jets, Fendi, others: Lai Mohammed

Despite refusing to provide the public details of how it brought IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu into the country amidst allegations of illegal abduction, President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime has been feeding Nigerians with unsubstantiated claims that Mr Kanu lived a luxury life, travelling around the world in private jets and wearing designer clothes while instigating violence in Nigeria.

On Thursday, information minister Lai Mohammed appeared to have fed a narrative that Mr Kanu corruptly enriched himself with financial donations meant for IPOB’s secessionist agenda.

“It will interest Nigerians to know that for over two years, our security and intelligence agencies were on the trail of the proscribed IPOB leader,” claimed Mr Mohammed, “as he lived a five-star life across several countries, travelling on chartered private jets, living in luxury apartments and turning out in designing clothes and shoes.”

Though Mr Mohammed claimed that Nigeria’s security agencies planned Mr Kanu’s re-arrest for over two years, his focus was on the IPOB leader’s fashion sense and not the specifics of his alleged abduction.

He added, “Of course, as we all saw, he was wearing an attire made by Fendi, a luxury Italian fashion brand when he was arrested.”

While assuring that Mr Kanu will to given a fair trial, Mr Mohammed further said the federal government would soon arrest the separatist leader’s collaborators.

“We can tell you that the forensic investigation carried out so far has revealed a treasure trove of information on the proscribed IPOB leader and his collaborators,” Mr Mohammed said.

Attorney general Abubakar Malami at a brief press briefing announced that security agencies apprehended Mr Kanu on Sunday.

The IPOB leader was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja, where the court ordered that he be remanded until the continuation of his trial set for July 26.

His remand came after the counsel to the attorney general, Labaran Shuaibu, informed the court that Mr Kanu was re-arrested after jumping bail and asked the court to remand Mr Kanu in a State Security Service facility pending his trial.
