As Waploaded reported earlier, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, in a statement released on Friday afternoon, June 4, announced the suspension of the platform in Nigeria.

He cited the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence” as a reason for the suspension.

The suspension of Twitter has sparked an outrage among Nigerians with most of them slamming the leadership for making a needless move after Buhari’s speech was deleted by Twitter.

However, Tiwa Savage’s view, the mother of one pointed to the fact that there are more pressing issues bedevilling the nation such as the killings in Imo State where young girls are abducted and murdered.

According to her, Twitter is not Nigeria’s problem therefore, the leadership’s attention on banning Twitter over a speech that was deleted is a case of misplaced priorities as kidnapping of more girls is a major problem that needs drastic remedies to it. She wrote:

“KILLINGS IN IMO, KIDNAPPING OF MORE GIRLS TWITTER IDS NOT OUR PROBLEM OOO”

Reacting to this, Twitter’s Senior Policy Communications Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Sarah Hart, in an email response sent to the media said;

“THE ANNOUNCEMENT MADE BY THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT THAT THEY HAVE SUSPENDED TWITTER’S OPERATIONS IN NIGERIA IS DEEPLY CONCERNING. WE’RE INVESTIGATING AND WILL PROVIDE UPDATES WHEN WE KNOW MORE.”
