This was announced on Friday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Adeyemi.

Possible Reason For Suspension:

Because Twitter deleted a genocidal post by the Nigerian President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday. The said post read as fellows ?

“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

Indeed it was a genocidal content and Twitter had no choice than to delete it off. However, the federal government of Nigeria, find Twitter’s action insulting and offensive.

Okay now let’s talk about the new development (Twitter Suspension In Nigeria).

QUESTION: Is it possible to suspend Twitter operation in a country?

ANSWER: Yes it is. Government blocking of Twitter access in a particular country is 100% possible. In some cases, governments and other authorities take unilateral action to block Internet access to Twitter or its content. As of 2019, the governments of China, Iran, North Korea, and Turkmenistan have blocked access to Twitter in those countries.

So Nigeria government could do same but I doubt if they can. E no go happen.

I mean why would they do that? Are we in military regime? Are we practicing autocracy or democratic system of government?

Twitter did nothing wrong if you ask me. Buhari’s statement was unpresidential and condemnable. The post was genocidal and it’s obvious.

Twitter have the right to block illegal content from anyone regardless.

In fact, Twitter acts on complaints by third parties, including governments, to remove illegal content in accordance with the laws of the countries in which people use the service. On processing a successful complaint about an illegal tweet from “government officials, companies or another outside party”, the social networking site will notify users from that country that they may not see it. This simply mean Twitter must have contacted Buhari’s account manager to take down the genocidal post, but he or she ignored, leaving them(Twitter) with no choice than to pull it down by themselves.

Also, under Twitter’s Terms of Service which requiring users agreement, Twitter retains the right to temporarily or permanently suspend user accounts based on violations. One such example took place on December 18, 2017, when it banned the accounts belonging to Paul Golding, Jayda Fransen, Britain First, and the Traditionalist Worker Party.

Even Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, has faced a limited degree of censorship in 2019, and following the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol has been completely suspended on January 8, 2021 according to an interpretation of two tweets by moderation. Yet he never ordered for suspension of Twitter operation in the United States.

Nigeria sha, th land of wonders! Anyways, suspension or not, VPN dey.
