Kandi Lenice Burruss-Tucker, known professionally by her mononym Kandi, is an American singer, songwriter, television personality, actress, and business woman. Burruss first gained notice in 1992 as a member of the female American vocal group Xscape.

Early Life

Kandi Lenice Burruss was born on May 17, 1976, in College Park, Georgia. Her older brother Patrick died in a car crash in 1991 when he was 22. She attended high school at Tri-Cities Performing Arts High School in the Atlanta suburb of East Point, Georgia. She got her first exposure to television when she was 15 and appeared on BET's "Teen Summit." While in high school, she formed Xscape with Tamika and LaTocha Scott and Tameka "Tiny Cottle." Jermaine Dupri signed the group to his So So Def Recordings label. Kandi graduated from high school in 1994.

Career

In the fall of 1993, Kandi was a senior in high school and Xscape released "Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha," their debut album. It peaked at number three on the R&B charts and produced two top 10 singles. "Off the Hook," Xscape's second album, was released in 1995. The band's third and final album, "Traces of My Lipstick" was released in 1998. After the group's third album, LaTocha Scott left to pursue a solo career. Not long after, the quartet got back together and made appearances on the soundtracks for "Hardball" and "Big Momma's House." Xscape then went on hiatus again until 2005.

Burruss is also a successful songwriter. She wrote TLC's hit song "No Scrubs," and Destiny's Childs' songs "Bug a Boo," "Bills, Bills, Bills," and "The Writings on the Wall." She has also written songs for Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Pink, Usher, and many more artists.

Kandi Burruss released "Hey Kandi," her first solo album in 2000. The album produced the singles "Don't Think I'm Not," and "Cheatin on me." She released her second album, "Kandi Koated" in 2010. Kandi founded her own record label and is also the CEO of Kandi Koated Entertainment. The high-end sex toys are designed to look like upscale cosmetic products and transform into travel-friendly toys for women. Her goal is to have Bedroom Kandi be as big as Victoria's Secret with its own lines of lingerie, lotions, body sprays, candles – and sex toys.

Personal Life

Kandi Burruss and her ex-boyfriend Russell "Block" Spencer have a daughter born in 2002 named Riley.

In early 2009, Burruss got engaged to Ashley "A.J." Jewell after dating for just a few months. Jewell was killed during a fight on October 9, 2009 outside a strip club.

In January 2013, Burruss revealed that she was engaged to Todd Tucker, a , a former line producer for "The Real Housewives of Atlanta." The two started dating in 2011 while the fourth season was being filmed. They married in April 2014. In January 2016, Burress and Tucker welcomed their son Ace. In November 2019, their daughter Blaze was born via surrogate.

Riley Burruss graduated from high school during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and her mother shared photos of her daughter's social distanced graduation ceremony on her social media. Riley will be attending NYU in the fall of 2020 as part of the incoming class of 2024.

She is a fan of the television show "The Chi."

Kandi's parents Joyce and Reverend Titus Burruss are divorced. In 2014, leading up to her wedding, her father Titus addressed the reasons why he and Kandi's mom Joyce got divorced. He claimed he was smoking and drinking a lot and Joyce threw him out. Kandi said her mom said he cheated on her. He said that's a lie. He said he came home from work and the locks were changed. He said Kandi's mother took out a restraining order against him so he couldn't see her.

In the summer of 2020, Kandi shared a photo with her mother Joyce and her kids Ace and Blaze and fans ate it up.
