Female Children Take Better Care Of Parents – FCT Residents

Some residence of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have acknowledged that the female children take up the responsibility of caring for their aged parents than the males.

Mr Alabi Olu Victor, who resides at Wuse 2, Abuja told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that because of the closeness of the female children to the parents, it became natural for them to take care of their aged parents.

“I believe that females are more kin on caring for their parents, this is because of the strong bond that the girl child has with her parents.

“Also the males are more occupied with caring for the needs of their immediate families therefore they tend to pay less attention to their parents.

“The bulk of family responsibilities usually fall on the father, the father figure in most families are usually the breadwinner of the family, handling most of the burdens of the family.

“The females are left with less duty thus she is able to make out time to extend a hand of love and care to her parents.

“It would be unfair to the male folk to say that they do not care for their parents; I believe that males still care for their folks though it may not be as constant as that of a female,’’ he said.

Mrs Gbemisola Fredrick, a civil servant at Abuja Municipal Area Council, said that the female children seem to be more compassionate when it came to the issue of parents.

“They show sympathy on the parents because they grow up to see their parents take care of the aged.

“Daughters place greater emphasis on their relationships with their parents. Women are the “silent majority” of caregivers at both ends – taking care of children and taking care of elderly parents.

“There are all these “hidden” aspects of care giving that a non-caregiver may never see or does not want to see. All children should be responsible for caring for the elderly,’’ said.

Miss Ogohi Hillary, a Corps member told NAN that parents should try as much as possible to make sure both sexes learn how to clean, cook, be self sufficient and be there for others, especially the aged.

“Every child is saddled with the responsibility of taking proper care of their parents at an old age, this should not be one sided for any reason,’’ she said. (NAN)
