Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The 10 Rings Trailer Reveals Multiple Marvel Villains & Giant Lions

Marvel Studios unveils the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie trailer. Originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, where it was confirmed Simu Liu had been cast as Shang-Chi, the movie was initially set to release in February.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing delays to the entirety of the MCU Phase 4 slate, it's now set to hit theaters in September. Production on Shang-Chi was also interrupted by lockdown efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus in Australia, where the Marvel movie filmed, but they ultimately wrapped filming in October 2020.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and with Liu leading a predominantly Asian cast, Shang-Chi is set to make major strides for the MCU in terms of representation. As a result, many are looking forward to the Marvel movie with excitement, and have been eagerly awaiting any kind of official look at Shang-Chi. Although unofficial previews have surfaced in the form of set photos and Shang-Chi tie-in merchandise like toys, little official marketing material had been released - until now. With about five months until Shang-Chi releases, Marvel has unveiled the first footage from the upcoming Phase 4 movie.

Marvel Studios released the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie trailer today. The footage shows off a first look at what to expect from the upcoming film, including Liu's new Marvel superhero. It also so happens that this teaser was released on Liu's birthday - he turns 32 today. In the film and the trailer, Liu is joined by Tony Leung, who plays Shang-Chi's father Wenwu; Awkwafina as Shang-Chi's friend Katy, Fala Chen as Jiang Li and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan. Check out the Shang-Chi movie trailer below.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the Shang-Chi trailer is getting to see Marvel Studios' take on martial arts action. While Netflix's Iron Fist was technically the first MCU martial arts project, it was produced by Marvel TV under the leadership of Jeph Loeb, rather than the film side's Kevin Feige - and it featured a white lead in Finn Jones as Danny Rand. Shang-Chi, however, has a much larger budget and an Asian-led cast, and Liu certainly isn't pulling any punches in his fight scenes as seen in the footage. He goes up against a variety of villains in this Shang-Chi trailer, including one with a red, white and black mask, another with a glowing sword that appears to be comics villain Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu) and some non-powered guys on the bus - among others.

There's also quite a grand scale to some of the action scenes, which feature armies going into battle against one another - and in one of those scenes it seems a fighter is accompanied by a giant lion, no doubt referencing Chinese foo dogs (the stone lions that can be seen as decoration). It's unclear how these battle scenes fit into the context of the movie, though some appear to be flashback. Since the trailer includes flashbacks to Shang-Chi's childhood, it makes sense that the history of the Ten Rings is explored in addition to the hero's. All told, the trailer hypes up an exciting and new kind of MCU movie. Though Shang-Chi's costume as seen on the movie poster isn't featured much in the trailer, that likely indicates there's plenty more Marvel has to reveal. Audiences will be able to find out all about it when Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hits theaters in September.
