Dwayne Johnson reveals that Black Adam has officially started filming. Already one of the world’s biggest movie stars, Johnson will next join the DCEU as the comic book nemesis of Shazam. Indeed the upcoming Black Adam movie will introduce the entire DC Comics Justice Society of America team, including the character Dr. Fate, to be played by Pierce Brosnan.

The arrival of the Justice Society is of course a major development for DC fans, as it brings about the DCEU debuts of several popular comic book characters. In addition to Brosnan’s Dr. Fate, the movie is set to introduce Noah Centineo as Atom-Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Black Adam also recently added James Cusati-Moyer and Bodhi Sabongui in mystery roles.

With the cast in place for Black Adam the movie is now going before cameras, as confirmed by Johnson himself in an Instagram post. See Johnson’s reveal in the space below:

Indeed Johnson has been very busy for months on social media teasing Black Adam, posting the usual impressive workout videos while dropping little hints about the script. There was even a recent post where Johnson revealed the Johnny Cash “Man in Black” lyrics that he uses to help him get into the right head-space to play Black Adam, calling the lyrics an “example of who Black Adam is, and who Black Adam is to the world of the DC universe, but also, I think, who Black Adam is to the world of superhero universes, period.”

Johnson is of course no stranger to franchise filmmaking, having added his presence to the Fast & Furious series for much of its run while also heading up the Jumanji reboot and its sequel. But obviously joining the DCEU is still a big deal for the former wrestler as he continues asserting his dominance in the box office world. It remains to be seen what the future ultimately holds for Black Adam beyond his introductory film, but it certainly seems a collision with his old comic book nemesis Shazam is on the horizon, given that Shazam is himself set to return in a sequel to the hit 2019 film that brought that particular character into the DCEU.

Given how all over the place the DCEU has been tone-wise in recent years, with darker movies like Joker co-existing alongside more light-hearted ones like Shazam!, it’s anyone’s guess where the tone of Black Adam will settle in. Johnson’s Johnny Cash tease certainly seems to indicate a dark direction for the movie. However, since this is still The Rock, it’s a fair guess the tone won’t be too dark for family audiences. Johnson has indeed done a magnificent job picking his projects and maintaining his image over the years, and there’s no reason to think Black Adam will tear him too far away from the mostly PG and PG13-rated groove he’s found since establishing his movie stardom.
