Why Producer Tags Are Important In Nigerian Music Industry - Editorial

Just recently, the argument of whether a producer tag is necessary or not came up again. While many argued that it is not necessary and it makes the song too complicated, others believe it should be on every song.

A producer tag for some of us who might know is a voice tag included in a song that tells the listeners or fans who produced the beat. Some popular producer tags are 'Its Krizbeatz the drummer boy', it's damn fresh, It's speroach, master master, selebobo on the beat, if it's SPAX then it's gotta be, Willis give em, etc. While many producers use a voice note as listed earlier, a few others prefer to have the artist give them a shout out like 'It's DonJazzy again, Kiddo Kiddominnat, etc. Even when most producers have their names as tags, others prefer a slang or an imprint like shabalistical (for killertunes), obah! (for blaise on the beats), this beat is ill (for Benjamz) and others.

As young producers are coming into the game, they are now picking up the idea of adding their tags to tunes. The addition of producer tags to tunes is now a norm in the Nigerian music industry after Don Jazzy's fame came from the shout outs he got from producing songs for D Banj, Wande Coal, D' Prince, and Ikechukwu under the famous Mo'hits records. Aside from the very many who do it in order to jump on trends, a lot of producers do it for fame while others do it for credit.

Credit

The creative space is an industry where credit does it all. In an industry where there is no curriculum vitae and times no way to verify someone's claims or catalogs, producer tags retain the producers' credits for his or her job on the track. Imagine if producers didn't include their tags on the songs they produced, a song could end up entering and topping charts all over the world without anyone knowing who produced the beat. Nigerians are mean when it comes to telling the next artist who produced their hot track probably because they don't want their competitor to outshine them.

This might deprive most producers of the credit they deserve to get and all the jobs and opportunities that they could have gotten.

Fame

There is no other way to explain this other than the fact that most of us today know Don Jazzy and a host of other producers all because they added their tags on songs they produced.

Branding

Producers tags help for the effective branding of music producers. Producers like Pheelz, Kel P, Rexxie, Blaq Jerzee, Selebobo, Kiddominant are able to release singles resting on the little exposure they got with their tags. They could as well sell merchs today if they want to all because they were able to brand themselves properly. Secondly, fans might get to listen to a new song all because of the guy behind the instrument. All this is because of how effective the producer has been able to brand himself and producer tags are essential in producer branding.
