Chris Hemsworth's action thriller film Extraction 2 is set to start filming this fall. The film is a sequel to the 2020 Netflix hit, which became the streamer's most-watched original movie ever. Directed by Sam Hargrave and produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, Extraction starred Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary and former army veteran who is tasked with traveling to Bangladesh to protect the son of a crime lord from his father's rival. The film is based on the graphic novel Ciudad, which was co-written by Anthony and Joe Russo with Ande Parks, and illustrated by Fernando León González.

Extraction received mixed reviews upon its release, with critics praising the action sequences and Hemsworth's performance but criticizing the film's weak plot and "white-savior" elements. The movie was a massive hit with viewers, particularly for its intense 12-minute action sequence that was filmed to look like a single, uncut shot. A few weeks after the original movie's release, a sequel was announced, with Joe Russo returning to write the script. Back in November, Joe Russo stated that the script was in the works and that he, Hemsworth, and Netflix were ready for the film to go into production sometime in 2021.

Now in an interview with Collider, Hargrave, who is also returning to direct, gives an update on the production schedule for Extraction 2. Hargrave explains that Russo is still working on the script and that the sequel is set to start filming in the fall as long as it does not face any delays due to COVID-19. You can read his full comment in the space below:

[That's] still the case, COVID-pending. That's kind of everyone's little caveat right now, but we're moving forward on it as if we're shooting in the fall. Joe [Russo] is still finalizing the script. We're all excited to read it. I've read different iterations, but I'm excited to read what he turns in. We're all looking forward to getting back in the saddle and hopefully bringing another action-packed adventure in the 'Extraction' universe.

Hargrave, who made his directorial debut with the first Extraction, is a frequent collaborator with the Russo brothers. A veteran stunt performer, Hargrave was a stunt coordinator on multiple MCU films, including Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and was brought in as a Second Unit Director on The Mandalorian season 2.

While there are no details on the upcoming sequel's plot yet, the first movie certainly left things open for Tyler Rake's story to continue. The first movie's surprise success and ambiguous ending mean that a lot is expected out of the sequel. Whether the movie will see Hemsworth's character take on a new mission or continue the storyline from the first film, fans can likely expect the action scenes to be taken to the next level. However, with filming set to start this fall, Extraction 2 will probably not see a release until 2022.
