Deadpool 3 Won't Begin Filming Until At Least 2022

While confirming Deadpool 3's place within the MCU, Marvel boss Kevin Feige revealed the movie won't begin filming until at least 2022.

Deadpool 3 isn't expected to begin filming until at least 2022. In 2016, Ryan Reynolds revived his much-maligned Wade Wilson from X-Men Origins: Wolverine and gave him the movie fans had always wanted to see with Deadpool. Instead of sewing his mouth up and depriving him of the very elements that made him special, Deadpool depicted a comics accurate Merc with a Mouth and became a critical and financial success. Deadpool 2 followed two years later, and with the extremely positive responses the franchise received, it seemed inevitable that a third film would follow.

However, matters regarding Deadpool 3 soon became murky. Disney's acquisition of Fox cast doubt on whether the third film would ever happen, particularly since Deadpool's R-rated sensibilities goes against Disney's family-friendly image. Reynolds confirmed Deadpool 3 to be in development at Marvel Studios back in late 2019, but updates beyond that were slow to come. Finally, news broke in November 2020 that Deadpool 3 is moving forward with new writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin. However, this still left a great deal of questions, such as whether the movie will be included within the MCU.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently spoke with Collider about the upcoming release of WandaVision, and he shared some new updates about Deadpool 3. In addition to confirming Deadpool 3 will be set within the MCU, he gave an idea about what the production timeline will be like. "It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor," Feige said. The script is currently being written, and as Marvel has so many projects on their hands, it looks like Deadpool 3 won't begin filming until 2022 at the earliest.

With this timeline in mind, Deadpool 3 might not be released until 2023. Right now, the MCU doesn't have any projects concretely scheduled for that year, though it seems likely Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will help flesh out the 2023 slate. Should Deadpool 3 actually debut in 2023, five years will have passed since the second film, making for quite the gap between installments.

While the longer wait is disappointing, it also makes sense. Deadpool 3 has likely inspired plenty of discussion within Marvel Studios, meaning it's probably taken some time to figure out how it will fit within the MCU. From there, the coronavirus pandemic must have delayed things, and between Marvel and Reynolds' packed schedules, finding time to work on it had to be tricky. Nevertheless, progress is finally being made, and now fans can rest assured that just because filming won't take place this year, it doesn't mean Deadpool 3 isn't happening at all. It's just taking a bit more time.
