Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy, Who is the King of Afrobeat?

The fight for supremacy between Starboy Entertainment boss, Wizkid and his colleagues; Davido and Burna Boy has been on for a while now. Even though these artists claim not to have disputes, their fans have been battling over who to crown the king of afrobeat.

Ayo Balogun also known as Wizkid is a Nigerian Afropop singer, songwriter, and performing artiste signed to RCA records. He penned down an international deal in 2016 before dropping his major record label debut project titled Sounds From The Other Side. The popular mixtape featured a host of international stars like Drake, TY Dolla Sign, Chris Brown, Tyga, and others. Wizkid tried to infuse the Caribbean and other sounds into afrobeat in order to penetrate the western market. This is some sense paved the way for him to rack up thousands if not millions of fans in the UK, Europe, and the United States of America.

David Adeleke aka Davido on the other hand joined Sony Music in 2016. That deal fetched him his collaborations with American singer and dancer, Chris Brown, Jamaican Popcaan, and a host of other international singers who joined him in his sophomore album A Good Time. Last year, Davido released a rich body of work titled A Better Time featuring Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, Young Thug, Chris Brown, HitBoy, Nas, and a couple of other artists.

Damini "Burna Boy" Ogulu is now a two times Grammy nominated Afrobeat singer. He bagged his first Grammy nomination last year following the release of his fourth studio album African Giant. He linked up with Warner Music Group, Atlantic Records, and his own imprint Spaceship Entertainment to release the critically acclaimed album. African Giant featured Jorja Smith, Jeremih, Damian Marley, and Future. It is a collection of afro-fusion, dancehall, pop, and hip pop. Burna Boy in 2020, bounced back with Twice As Tall another Grammy-nominated album. Burna Boy with his new album produced by veteran music executive Diddy is a force to reckon with when talking about Afrobeat in this era.
