Bridgerton season 2 could begin filming as soon as March, despite the fact that Netflix has yet to announce the show's renewal. The Shonda Rhimes produced show, created under her overall deal with Netflix, premiered on Christmas day to rave reviews. Based on the Julia Quinn novels, the series follows the titular Bridgerton clan in Regency-era London as they search for their one true loves.

The eight episode first season quickly shot to the top of Netflix's Top 10 chart after its premiere. Its immediate popularity is clear - Bridgerton trended on Twitter yesterday because of the show's many fans discussing the toxicity of the central relationship between Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset. On top of that, Bridgerton's inclusive storytelling and its period detail have drawn in viewers curious to see what they hype is all about.

Now, in a scoop that could rival even Lady Whitsledown's papers, TVLine reports indicate that production on Bridgerton season 2 may be begin earlier than expected. Sources say filming of season 2 could begin as early as March 2021. Netflix has yet to formally renew the show and the streamer declined to comment. Netflix typically waits about a month before making decisions on whether to renew their shows, but the streamer is known to give creatives a secret greenlight to start working on additional seasons before making any official announcements. This was the case with Stranger Things season 2.

Still, the streamer has become particularly stingy with their renewals - Netflix is known more for its cancellation of shows than its continuation of them. Bridgerton could be an exception, though, for a few reasons. Rhimes' involvement is one of those reasons - her overall deal with Netflix was a big get for the streamer. Previously, Rhimes' shows on ABC garnered millions of viewers and helped the producer build her television empire. Now that she calls Netflix home, the streamer will want to show an investment in continuing her high-profile projects, of which Bridgerton is certainly included.

Another reason, besides the show's immediate popularity, is the source material. Quinn has written eight novels, each one centered around a specific member of the Bridgerton clan. With enough source material to keep the show running for years to come, Netflix could build another flagship show indicating their interest in investing in at least some of their series for the long haul. If season 2 did begin filming in March, Bridgerton could potentially return for Christmas 2021, setting up a tradition of sorts for the streamer. While the Bridgerton season 1 ending provided enough closure on the off chance the series isn't renewed, it looks likely that viewers will be watching the love lives of the Bridgerton clan for years to come.
