A new Batwoman season 2 poster confirms Javicia Leslie's costume breaks Arrowverse tradition in one key way. Leslie will make her debut as new character Ryan Wilder when Batwoman returns for its new season on January 17. Her character will take over the Batwoman mantle from Kate Kane following Ruby Rose's shocking departure from the show earlier this year. Leslie was cast as the new lead soon after, with even Rose herself expressing excitement at the news. Viewers have had quite awhile to get used to the idea of a new Batwoman, as The CW held new episodes of its Arrowverse series for 2021 due to the pandemic.

Despite Rose's departure, Kate won't be killed off the show. In fact, her disappearance will serve as one of season 2's biggest mysteries. Ryan will wear Kate's suit when she first debuts, but will soon get one of her own. The new costume features exciting changes, including more touches of red and a natural, curlier wig. Several images have provided a look at Leslie's suit as Ryan, including her mask. They've suggested the character will forgo the usual black eye makeup popularized by Arrow and worn by Kate in season 1 of Batwoman.

The new poster, released by The CW and shared by Leslie on Instagram, confirms this change, offering a close up look at Ryan's mask. It's clear from the image she isn't wearing the traditional eye makeup underneath. The season 2 poster also includes the tagline "Find your power," perhaps alluding to Ryan's journey to becoming Batwoman.

Though the difference in Batwoman's season 2 costume may seem minor, it speaks to the show setting itself apart from Arrow. Of all The CW's DC shows, Batwoman season 1 was the most like Arrow in tone. It also focused on grounded hand-to-hand combat over superpowers. For that reason, it made sense Rose's Kate took a similar approach to her mask as Oliver Queen and other Arrow characters.

However, Batwoman is treading new ground with season 2, including in regards to Ryan's costume. With all of the changes to the suit, it makes sense to switch up Batwoman's makeup as well. Additionally, with Arrow concluding earlier this year, The CW is focused on the future of the Arrowverse and less so what came before. Though Oliver's mask was iconic at the time he first wore it, changes to the look are not only appropriate but exciting ahead of Batwoman season 2.
