Netflix has released the first page of the script for the premiere of The Witcher season 2. An adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga of fantasy novels and short stories, The Witcher became an instant hit for Netflix when its first season was released earlier this year. Season 2 is currently in production and will feature the same core three protagonists of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri of Cintra (Freya Allan).

The first season of the Netflix series consisted mostly of setup and backstories for those three main characters. The episodes were set across multiple time periods and generally pulled inspiration from Sapkowski’s short stories, which occur before the core Witcher novels' events. The show balanced a delicate blend of high fantasy drama, self-contained episodic storylines, horror, and even comedy moments throughout the season. Season 2 has no official release date yet but is planned to come out sometime in 2021.

As production on season 2 continues, Netflix has posted the first script page of the season premiere to their Twitter account “Netflix Queue.” The opening scene shows a family of three – a merchant and his wife and daughter – walking through the woods at night. They come upon a village hoping to find lodging, but the whole place seems deserted. Suddenly, a creature from the shadows steals away both the husband and wife, apparently tearing them to pieces and devouring them in the dark. Terrified, the daughter begins running toward the mansion on a nearby hill. Geralt underscores the whole ordeal with an ominous but seemingly unrelated narration.

If the first scene indicates the tone to come, season 2 could lean even more into the horror direction than the first. That fits with the new season’s previously-revealed codename/subtitle “mysterious monsters.” The world of fantasy TV is about to get more crowded again as both Amazon’s new Lord of the Rings show and House of the Dragon, HBO’s Targaryen-centric Game of Thrones sequel, approach. The Witcher’s horror stylings are one of its more unique aspects in the genre, so it’s nice to see Netflix diving further in that direction.

Of course, one page can only say so much about what’s to come. With a vast collection of Sapkowski’s stories to pull from, any number of things could be in store for Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer. Still, it’s a fun holdover while fans wait for more concrete news. The Witcher season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix in 2021.
