Australia, Norway To Partner NIMASA In Capacity Development

Angela Tierney, Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, said on Tuesday that her country would partner with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in providing technical support and human capacity development.

This is contained in a statement issued in Lagos by the Deputy Director and Head of Public Relations of NIMASA, Mr Isichei Osamgbi.

The statement said the envoy, who was on a visit to the NIMASA headquarters in Lagos, commended the human capacity building drive of the agency.

It said that Tierney expressed Australia’s willingness to work with NIMASA in building the requisite capacity for the maritime industry.

The statement said the Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Rolf Ree, had earlier visited the agency and also stated his country’s readiness for the provision of technical support to NIMASA.

According to the statement, the support is to enable the agency to realising the full potential of the Nigerian maritime industry.

The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Ziakede Akpobolokemi, while receiving his guests, expressed willingness to partner with major maritime nations such as Australia and Norway, particularly in the area of capacity building, the statement said.

“Australia is a nation that enjoys high respect among the comity of maritime nations.

“Partnership with your country will surely help us realise the potential of building a competent workforce that is poised to take the Nigerian maritime sector to greater heights.

“The support so far given to the agency by Norway has been of immense benefit to the maritime sector locally,” the statement quoted the director-general as saying.

The statement urged Norway not to relent in its support, as such would continue to help in growing maritime nations like Nigeria.

The statement assured the envoys of improvement in monitoring Nigeria’s maritime domain in real time, using satellite surveillance system that covers the whole of Nigeria’s coast and the Gulf of Guinea.

According to the statement, the progress of NIMASA will attract more commercial activities from around the world. (NAN)
