Star Wars Art Highlights The Tragedy of the Skywalker Family

A new piece of Star Wars fan art showcases the tragedy of the Skywalker family with scenes from all three of the franchise's trilogies.

A new piece of Star Wars fan art showcases the three generations of tragedy in the Skywalker family. Upon George Lucas' first Star Wars release in 1977, the franchise quickly a pop culture phenomenon, which spawned three trilogies, spin-off movies, and TV shows. While dozens of memorable characters have been introduced in the last 43 years, the Skywalker family has been at the center of the main series of movies.

Luke Skywalker was the first member of the family introduced in 1977 before audiences found out that Darth Vader was his father. The original trilogy ended with Vader being redeemed, with the now-iconic villain sacrificed himself to save his son from Emperor Palpatine. Lucas then decided to flesh out Anakin's backstory with the prequel trilogy. While it got mixed reviews, the scenes where Anakin lost his mother Shmi and his wife Padmé in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith respectively were truly heartbreaking. Even though Darth Vader had died thirty years prior to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, his legacy still loomed over the sequel trilogy with the three films revolving around Ben Solo's submission to the dark side and eventual redemption.

While the Skywalker family may no longer be the focal point of future movies or TV shows, there are a few upcoming Star Wars projects that still involve the Skywalker storyline. With Obi-Wan Kenobi getting his own TV show, the downfall of Anakin will likely be a big part of Kenobi's journey, and it's even rumored that Hayden Christensen could reprise his role in flashback sequences. Likewise, Star Wars: The Bad Batch takes place after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the Cassian Andor prequel is set five years before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so Darth Vader will at the very least be mentioned if not have a brief appearance in these shows.

The Skywalker saga may not have ended the way all fans had hoped, and moments like Leia being reunited with Ben is something that fans will likely never see. The shows mentioned above may further explain events in the original and sequel trilogies, but there is only so much they can change without retconning past movies. That being said, with so many upcoming Star Wars projects set around or during the Empire's reign, the story of the Skywalkers will always be looming in the background.
