Why The Mandalorian Doesn’t Get Hot Or Cold On Weird Planets

The Mandalorian's Din Djarin can seemingly brave any element, hot or cold. And, the bounty hunter's armor may be why.

With the second season of The Mandalorian now released, the titular bounty hunter Din Djarin has visited a number of planets - some brand new - but has seemingly never suffered from extreme heat or cold conditions. Despite the fact that seemingly all of the Mandalorian's armor and equipment is dedicated to making him a better fighter, it seems apparent that the galaxy-trotting adventurer must also have some augmentations that keep him from perishing in the extreme weather conditions he navigates for missions.

While there is no explicit reference to Hoth within the show's episodes, the planet of Maldo Kreis offers a similarly frozen appearance to the icy world from The Empire Strikes Back. Despite the extreme weather of the planet and the apparent discomfort of Djarin's unnamed passenger known as "Frog Lady," Djarin is never afflicted by the planet's low temperatures. Similarly, the Mandalorian visits and revisits the scorching world of Tatooine several times and not once is seen suffering under the planet's two sweltering suns.

The major challenge that Din Djarin has to overcome in order to be safe in the extreme temperatures is his armor. While Mando's Beskar steel armor is obviously a huge aid to the bounty hunter in battle, steel is not typically the best thing to be covered in when facing extreme elements and the issue comes down to a matter of heat conduction. Steel is incredible at conducting heat, which is why steel feels so cold to the touch on a cold day. The metal is actually sapping the heat from the skin touching it. Similarly, steel feels extremely hot on a hot day because there is so much heat available for it to absorb. As a result, the steel that covers Din Djarin's body would likely make him hotter during summer days and colder during winter nights, so his adaptability requires some answer.

Given that he is covered in steel plates, the hot days and cold nights should make short work of Din Djarin without something built into his armor to solve the issue. The show never explicitly explains how Djarin is able to overcome the elements but there are things Djarin could be using to give himself an edge against nature. A scientifically advanced thermal suit could fit snugly under all of that cloth, leather, and steel visible as the make-up of his armor. Better yet, the bounty hunter's Beskar outfit could retain some of the properties of the early generation Mandalorian crusaders.

Within the Legends expanded universe removed from canon following Disney's buyout of Lucasfilm in 2012, Mandalorian armor first began to incorporate technological advenacements under Mandalore the Ultimate thousands of years before the events of The Mandalorian. After opening the Mandalorian clans to outside species, Mandalore permitted numerous cultures to use their own technological developments to improve upon the Mandalorian armor. Under Mandalore the Ultimate, Mandalorian crusaders even began wearing insulated and pressurized suits that allowed the warriors to survive exposure to space.

While content derived from Star Wars Legends is not canon within the Star Wars universe, it does provide a useful guideline for understanding how some of the gaps within Star Wars lore can possibly be addressed. In short, if the ancient Mandalorians under Mandalore the Ultimate could find ways to insulate their suits well enough to survive the extreme temperature of space, then Din Djarin could surely devise a way to adapt his suit to protect him from the elements. After all, he does have thousands of years worth of technological advancements on his side and his entire modus operandi requires him to navigate all manner of environments. Being prepared for all of them is the basis for success on his missions and Legends offering an answer in the form of the thousands of years of technological advancement prior to events of The Mandalorian suggests Mando could be drawing from the same warfaring cultural secrets.
