HBO Max Trolls Henry Cavill’s Justice League Mustache For No Shave November
HBO Max expertly trolls Henry Cavill's mustache troubles in 2017's Justice League through a cheeky No Shave November movie recommendation.
HBO Max pokes some fun at Henry Cavill's Justice League mustache nightmare. Cavill has played Clark Kent, aka Superman, in the DCEU for the past few years. While Cavill starred in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, his facial hair was never really an issue until 2017's Justice League.
Cavill grew his now-infamous mustache for his role in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Ironically enough, the facial hair was actually a stylistic choice, rather than one mandated by the studio. That being said, Cavill initially thought that he'd wrapped on Justice League, which is why he grew out his mustache. However, after Joss Whedon stepped in to replace Zack Snyder, he completely overhauled the project, which meant additional photography was required. As a result, while Warner Bros. needed Cavill to come back for reshoots, the actor was contractually obligated to keep his Fallout facial hair.
HBO Max welcomes the start of No Shave November by expertly trolling Cavill. The streaming subscription giant has curated a list of recommended movies for viewers to get "mustache ideas for the month." The films include 2009's Sherlock Holmes, Gangs of New York, An American Pickle, Boogie Nights, and—of course—Justice League. You can check out HBO Max's cheeky movie line-up in the image below:
Cavill's great mustache saga ended on a somewhat ridiculous note. Justice League executives decided that the best course of action was to give Cavill a CGI shave. Although the CGI work wasn't a particularly expensive endeavor, it was a massive headache for the visual effects team. More specifically, the effects team was under a strict deadline, and it took 25 weeks to remove the mustache from a single five-minute clip. The final result was disastrous, and it was immediately evident that Cavill's upper lip had endured a fair amount of computerized plastic surgery. To that end, Warner Bros. should have just opted for Superman to appear with a beard, which is a look that's been seen in comics before. To be perfectly frank, anything would have been better than the Justice League CGI debacle that fans got instead.
While Zack Snyder's Justice League reshoots are currently underway, it doesn't seem like there will be a repeat of Cavill's mustache fiasco. Snyder's vision of Justice League has been highly anticipated for years, and it will be great to see what the original director envisioned for the film. Hopefully, it includes mind-blowing action scenes, amazing character development—and absolutely no facial hair drama.
