Clive Barker To Executive Produce Hellraiser HBO Series

Clive Barker, director of the original Hellraiser movie, has joined the team of HBO’s upcoming Hellraiser series as an executive producer.

Clive Barker, the director of the 1987 Hellraiser movie and author of the book The Hellbound Heart, has joined HBO’s upcoming Hellraiser TV series as an executive producer. The Hellraiser TV show was announced earlier this year and features an ensemble of horror and science fiction creatives. Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica) signed on as showrunner and writer with Michael Dougherty (Trick r’ Treat), and Halloween director David Gordon Green will be directing the first few episodes.

According to Deadline, Clive Barker is the latest addition to the Hellraiser series’ creative team as he will be executive producing the show alongside Dan Farah (Reader Player One) and Roy Lee (It). Farah was instrumental in bringing Barker onto the project and securing his rights, and Barker is reportedly very excited to give new life to the Hellraiser mythology and to share its stories with a new audience.

Barker is known as the father of the Hellraiser franchise, having both penned the original novel and directed the first movie. As the ongoing custody battle over the rights to Hellraiser with Park Avenue Entertainment rages on, it’s clear that Barker wants more creative control over the franchise he created, and joining the HBO series as an executive producer is a step in the right direction. If Barker’s lawsuit with Park Avenue is effective, then all Hellraiser rights could revert back to Barker by 2021, which may mean good things for the HBO series.

The HBO Hellraiser series is a planned continuation of the existing Hellraiser mythology, which has become a monumental in the world of pop culture over the last thirty years. Nevertheless, no new property has been as successful as the first Hellraiser movie by Barker. With both Barker and David Gordon Green, who brought new life to the Halloween franchise, signed on creatives for the HBO series, Hellraiser may just be restored back to its former glory.
