NANS Wants Akume For Senate President

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged Senators-elect in the 8th Assembly to support the candidature of Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume to emerge as Senate President.

President of NANS, Comrade Tijani Usman who made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday insisted that Akume has given the opposition voice in the 7th Assembly adding that it was only natural that he emerges as Senate President.

“Senator Akume was very effective as a Minority Leader in the Senate. Therefore, it is common sense that the man who did well with little responsibility should be given higher responsibility”.

Besides, Comrade Tijani stressed that Senator Akume has proven to be a leader of people and resources haven single-handedly built opposition in Benue State, a hitherto PDP controlled state.

He said Akuma has over the years proven to be concerned with the development of the people and society hence his towering political profile.

“Senator Akume remains one of the few who served as governor for eight years and has not been linked with any allegations of corruption and other moral impediments. Instead, he has been a dependable bridge builder and a highly detribalised Nigerian.

“As governor, it is on record that Akume showed commitment to the education sector. He established College of Health Sciences in Makurdi and Agashua, Guma local government area; built Ultra-modern colleges across the state and increased students bursary from N2,500 to N5,500 amongst others.
